History
In 1934, Vernon and Maggie Hilliard dreamed of the kind of summer camp they would like their only child Peggy and her friends to grow up in. "Uncle Vernon" and "Aunt Mag" founded Camp Fern on 100 acres of forest overlooking spring-fed Lake Fern.
Uncle Vernon built every cabin from native logs, fitting each one into a space so as to lose the fewest number of trees. He was easy going, always joking, and beloved by everyone.
There could never be anyone just like Aunt Mag, whose contagious laughter was known far and wide. Her goal was for every camper to have fun and to develop physically, spiritually, socially, and mentally.
Uncle Vernon and Aunt Mag were aided throughout the years by many cousins, outstanding director Rita Pilkey, ``Mr Bill" Rotzler, and groundskeeper Daris Wells.
Miss Peggy passed away in July, 1999. Her quick smile and warm hugs, her strong faith and many Vesper talks are recorded in our memory for all time. Over 75 years after its beginning, Camp Fern is now run by Miss Peggy's energetic daughter, Margaret Rotzler Lee. Brother Dr. Bill Rotzler, his wife Marcia and their sons, Hilliard and William, serve as valued consultants.
